Science Policy
We are facing unprecedented environmental and social challenges. As a scientist, I want to build relationships with communities and learn what their needs are so I can help inform and craft evidence-based policy that is centered around communities. Evidence-based policy is the path forward for sustainable, inclusive, and equitable practices that serve all of us.

Science Policy Career Panel
In February of 2020 (Pre-pandemic according to state and federal officials) I organized and moderated a science policy career panel that I hosted with Ridge 2 Reef. My goal was to provide undergraduate and graduate students with the opportunity to network with professional scientists, climate organizers/advocates, urban planners, and local policy folks. We had a fantastic panel and great questions from the audience, including everything from how to begin a career in science policy, to how to successfully engage with folks who may not share the same values. Huge thanks to Courtney Hunt, Jennifer Long, and Adrianna Burton from R2R who helped me put this together!

CCST Science Translators Showcase
Through some informational interviews with science policy fellows, I found out about the California Council on Science and Technology (CCST) Science Translators Showcase, which is a program designed to give early career scientists exposure to the world of science policy. There was a short application process which involved recording a 60 second elevator pitch about my research. We had weekly seminars to learn about science policy and hone our pitches for policy makers. The whole program culminated in a day at the California State Capitol, Sacramento, where we each got to chat with policy makers and their staff about our respective research. It was a great networking experience, and a wonderful way to practice pitching science to policy makers for evidence-based police!

League of Women Voters Orange Coast
I am a member of the League of Women Voters Orange Coast Chapter. I am proud to be part of a 100 year-old nonpartisan, activist, grassroots organization that is doing critical work every day to promote a healthy democracy through voter engagement. Now more than ever we need evidence-based positions and excellent leadership that aims to help all of our community members, and the League provides that.
My LWV activities:
1) Climate Change Task Force: I am part of a League group that is researching and monitoring the climate change positions and policies of our local municipalities. We want to support and urge city leaders to take action on climate change.
2) Voter's Edge: A website that provides free and non-partisan ballot information across California. I am helping to contact candidates to encourage them to add their information to the website.
3) As a League member, I had the privilege of advocating for ACA6 to Senator Moorlach's District Director Scott Carpenter. The bill aims to give back the vote to those who are on parole - disproportionately Black and people of color. Below is a picture of our zoom meeting with Mr. Carpenter, League members, Initiate Justice's Policy Associate Daisy Chavez, and their Outside Organizer Graham Finochio.
4) In January of 2020, Newton Hood and I (pictured below) presented to the Orange Coast Chapter on the importance of addressing Climate Change to make Democracy work. We discussed issues of environmental justice and why making Climate Change a League priority matters so that everyone has a voice in who represents them.
